Alglave Guillaume, 32, was an architect collaborator. His brother Thomas, 23, had just obtained an LLM European and legal studies . Nothing predestined these two boys, from the Normandy to take the lead of the tile factory in Saint-Samson-la-Poterie. Although ... The love of heritage, taste of noble raw materials such as clay of the Pays de Bray, they grew up with.
The two brothers fell in love with this factory which manufactures with a recognized know-how , the "Saint-Samson's floor tiles" . They bought it in 2008 and have learned everything on the job through the communicative passion of three employees working: From pressing clay tiles, one by one, to the firing.
The current factory was built by Jules Briard, earthenware industrialist, in 1885 on the site of a former tile factory dating from 1836 and founded by the Lévêque family.
Ceramic work in the region of Saint-Samson la Poterie dates back to the 13th century. In the 19th century there were around twenty ceramic workshops in Saint-Samson. The First World War interrupted this growth and the workshops disappeared one after the other. Les Carrelages de Saint-Samson is the last representative of a formerly prosperous industry in the Pays de Bray region. (Normandy)
However, in 1975, there is still crazy people to say that the soul of this place is not dead. It's a gamble, gutsy, risky, but it will be tried and from almost nothing: a ghostly factory populated by memories of those who worked and a small team, welded, which will reactivate ovens, dryers and create, progressively the range of products available today.
More than any other factory, we strive to maintain, whenever the quality requires it, the fingerprint of manual work.
This very traditional technique keeps the random, intimate texture of the clay expressed in a multitude of colours.
Even before firing and the work of the time, hand-making will bring out the veining of clays. Tiles will be polychrome; never identical and with a very singular physiognomy.
If you have the ability to come, you will visit an unusual and captivating production site, which remained unchanged since the 19th century. Moreover, the selection of tiles carried out on site is facilitated.
However, if you can not move, we allow you to download our product catalog in our products section.
In our process two local clays are used :
- Variegated red clay gives after firing a range of colours from bright pink to dark brown this is the "Saint Samson” line.
- A gray clay, becoming very clear when fired : This is the "Mercastel” line
This is the life our ancestors led one century ago. They used the same tools, the same materials even if this is surprising nowadays. It perpetuates the “mottled” tile technique.
The natural mottling of some clay is kept by putting the clay through a conical roll; after cutting, the tiles are pressed manually. Then they dry almost four weeks naturally.
In addition, in order to suit the charm of ancient fabrication methods to the requirements of daily use, the firing temperature is raised to 1120 ° C minimum, thanks to the quality of the clay, providing our products with exceptionally easy care in everyday life.
